MUSIC REVIEW | RIVAL SONS – Great Western Valkyrie (2014)

Great Western Valkyrie is dirty, sleazy and just a bit threatening. But like the best live music venues, that’s what makes Rival Sons so good at what they do. It’s a throwback to vintage rock, but that doesn’t stop them adding plenty of their own new takes on the classic bands they so obviously love.

The riffs are fat, the rhythms are pulverising and the only thing that wails more than the solos are Jay Buchanan’s vocals. If Rival Sons and Great Western Valkyrie had a smell, it would be a combination of stale whiskey, cigarettes and sweat.
